Guest Editors: Dr. Gerald Seet (MAE, NTU), Prof. Sunil Joshi (MAE, NTU), Dr. Govindasamy Balasekaran (PESS, NIE). For the Advanced Materials symposium, authors with accepted abstracts will be invited to submit a full length paper, to be peer-reviewed and published in a special issue of Materials & Design, an Elsevier journal (SCI) with impact factor of 2.913. SPEIC14 is the scientific conference on Combustion and related fields, Lisboa, Portugal, November 19 to 21, 2014

Following the very successful SPEIC10 conference on the island of Tenerife (Spain), the SPEIC14 conference will be held at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisboa, Portugal, from November 19 to 21, 2014.

SPEIC14 is the scientific conference on Combustion and related fields, jointly organized by the Portuguese and Spanish Sections of the Combustion Institute.

The first conference took place in the island of Tenerife (Spain), on 16–18 June 2010. The Conference was attended by around 100 researchers from over 20 countries and 4 continents. It featured 5 Keynote Lectures, and about 70 contributed papers.

The 2014 edition of SPEIC will serve the additional purpose of honoring Professor César Dopazo and his scientific leadership in the fields of Fluid Mechanics, Combustion and Energy

The Conference will address the following topics, with a special emphasis on sustainable combustion:

•         Reaction kinetics, and large-molecule (soot, PAH, dioxines) phenomena

The Fifth International Conference on Design and Analysis of Protective Structures (DAPS2015), 19-21 May 2015, Singapore

The idea of holding the International Conference on Design and Analysis of Protective Structures against Impact/Impulsive/Shock Loads was conceived in 2003 by the three founding institutes of the conference series, namely, National Defense Academy, Japan, Pennsylvania State University, USA and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

The first conference was organized by the National Defense Academy, Japan and was held in Tokyo, Japan, on 15-19 December, 2003 at the Hotel Grand Hill Ichigaya. The theme of the first conference was "State-of-the-art in Protective Technology for Structure Construction". The second conference organized by the Defence Science & Technology Agency, Singapore and the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore was held in Singapore on 13-15 November 2006 at the Shangri-La Hotel. The theme of the second conference was "Advances in Protective Technology". The third conference was also organized by the Defence Science & Technology Agency, Singapore and the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore on 10-12 May 2010 at the Novotel Clarke Quay. The fourth conference was organized by Agency for Defense Development and the Korea Institute of Military Science and Technology on 19-22 June 2012 in Jeju, Korea.

Microfluidics 2014 (μFlu’14) is the fourth European Conference on Microfluidics. This event takes place every two years and follows on from previous conferences held in Heidelberg (2012), Toulouse (2010) and Bologna (2008).

Background

MNE is a major annual international conference, devoted to micro and nano engineering, held in a European country every September. The conference brings together engineers and scientists from across the world to discuss recent progress and future trends in the fabrication, manufacturing, operation and application of micro and nano-structures and devices. Applications in electronics, magnetics, photonics, electromechanics, environment and life sciences are also discussed. MNE 2014 will be the 40th conference in a series that was started in Cambridge in 1975 and which was held most recently in Athens (2008), Ghent (2009), Genoa (2010), Berlin (2011), Toulouse (2012) and London (2013). In September 2014, MNE will take place in Lausanne, Switzerland in the new Swiss Tech Conference Center on the beautiful EPFL campus overlooking Lake Geneva and the Savoy Alps. It is estimated that the conference will attract 500-800 participants.

Conference Structure and Highlights

The conference will start with a welcome reception, held on Monday, 22 September 2014 in the evening. The technical sessions will be held from Tuesday 23 through to Friday 26 September, with the meeting closing on Friday. The programme combines plenary and parallel oral sessions featuring invited presentations by a number of internationally recognised experts and will also include both contributed oral and poster presentations. Accepted abstracts will be assigned to oral or poster presentations, based on recommendations from the International Programme Committee. The 6th International Symposium on Microchemistry and Microsystems

Rationale

The simultaneous presence of several different phases in external or internal flows such as gas, liquid and solid is found in daily life, environment and numerous industrial processes. These types of flows are termed multiphase flows, which may exist in different forms depending on the phase distribution. Examples are gas-liquid transportation, crude oil recovery, circulating fluidized beds, sediment transport in rivers, pollutant transport in the atmosphere, cloud formation,  fuel injection in engines,  bubble column  reactors  and  spray

for food processing, to name only a few. As a result of the interaction between the different phases such flows are rather complicated and very difficult to describe theoretically. For the design and optimisation of such multiphase systems a detailed understanding of the interfacial transport phenomena is essential.

This course is rather unique as it is one of few in the community that is specifically designed to deliver, a) a best practice guidance and b) the latest trends, in CFD for dispersed multi-phase flows.

The course appeals to researchers and engineers involved in projects requiring CFD for (wall-bounded) turbulent dispersed multiphase flows with bubbles, drops or particles. Moreover, delegates are offered the opportunity to present their work via 10 minute presentations , thereafter, the lecturers can offer prospective solution.

Introduction
With the rapid growth in computing and communications technology, the past decade has witnessed a proliferation of powerful parallel and distributed systems and an ever-increasing demand for practice of high performance computing and communications (HPCC). HPCC has moved into the mainstream of computing and has become a key technology in determining future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches, especially when the solution of large and complex problems must cope with very tight timing schedules.

The HPCC-2014 conference is the 16th IEEE International Conference on High Performance and Communications. It will provide a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry, and government to address the resulting profound challenges and to present and discuss their new ideas, research results, applications and experience on all aspects of high performance computing and communications. Micro- and nanofluidics has considerably matured over the last 2 decades. This holds both for the fundamental understanding of the flow on a micro- and nanoscale and for the applications in industry. Various start-up companies have been founded and global players have realized the importance of the field. Applications can be found in the chip-industry, medical diagnostics, drug development and delivery, ink-jet printing, … Interestingly enough, more fundamentally oriented and more application oriented scientists in this field have stayed rather separate, generally visiting different conferences. The aim of the present 3-day international Flow14 conference is to overcome this separation and to bridge the gap between these two branches of micro- and nanofluidics.

International conference on Flavor Physics and Mass Generation from 10 to 14 February 2014.

The start of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is bringing particle physics to an unprecedented TeV energy frontier, at which some long-standing questions associated with the Standard Model will be answered and new physics might be observed. In 2013 a new boson with a mass of 126 GeV was discovered. This boson might be the Higgs boson, which generates the masses of the weak bosons, or an excitation of the weak neutral boson, if the weak bosons are bound states of smaller constituents.

The implications of this discovery for the physics of quark and lepton flavors will be considered. Furthermore the following topics will be discussed:

1. Mixing of leptons and neutrino oscillations
2. Mixing of quarks and CP-violation
3. Mass generation for leptons and quarks
4. Flavor symmetries and models for quark and lepton masses
5. Mass generation in Quantum Chromodynamics
6. Flavor physics and Grand Unification
7. Heavy flavor physics and the LHC
8. Rare B-decay and new physics
9. See-saw mechanism and leptogenesis
